BEHIND THE NUMBER

How the calculation works

The unrounded chargeable weight is the larger of actual and DIM weight. The rounded estimate rounds each package up to the next whole lb or kg. Enter the divisor in the displayed units; carrier dimension rounding, minimum charges, and contract rules vary.

DIM weight = length × width × height / divisor

When this calculation helps

Use this comparison before quoting a parcel whose packed size is large relative to its scale weight. It identifies which entered weight basis dominates under the selected divisor, not the final carrier price.

Check the interpretation

Confirm the divisor and dimensional rounding in the actual service agreement. A small change to an outside dimension can cross a billing-weight boundary. Do not substitute product dimensions for the sealed package, and keep minimum charges and surcharges outside this weight comparison.

Good to know

Which divisor should I use?

Use the divisor from your carrier quote or contract. The example uses 139 in³/lb or 5,000 cm³/kg; these are editable examples, not a rate guarantee.

Why is the chargeable weight higher?

A large, light package can consume more vehicle capacity than its physical weight suggests. Dimensional weight accounts for that space.
