BEHIND THE NUMBER

How the calculation works

Imperial mode uses US gallons, not UK gallons. Metric mode uses liters per 100 kilometers. Switching modes converts distance, efficiency, and price together, preserving the same trip. Use the complete planned distance, including empty return miles when relevant. All money inputs must use the same currency.

US gallons = miles / mpg; liters = km * (L/100 km) / 100; total cost = fuel used * fuel price + other costs

When this calculation helps

Use a complete route distance, including an empty return or repositioning leg when it belongs to the decision. Model realistic loaded consumption rather than assuming the vehicle achieves the same efficiency in every condition.

Check the interpretation

US gallons are not UK gallons, and liters per 100 kilometers is an inverse efficiency measure. A fuel-only comparison excludes ownership, labor, maintenance, and other vehicle costs unless entered separately; it is not a complete cost per mile.

This is not a full vehicle operating-cost model. Idling, terrain, payload, maintenance, labor, depreciation, and taxes are excluded unless included in your entered assumptions or other costs.

Good to know

Does it fetch fuel prices?

No. Enter the fuel price applicable to your own trip. Example prices are illustrative, not live market data.

Why does the efficiency number change in metric mode?

Miles per US gallon measures distance per volume; liters per 100 kilometers measures volume per distance. They are inverse measures, so a lower metric consumption means better efficiency.
