International unit definitions. US short tons and metric tonnes are distinct.
Conversions use international definitions: 1 pound = 0.45359237 kilograms, 1 inch = 0.0254 meters, and 1 cubic foot = 0.028316846592 cubic meters. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg; a US short ton is 2,000 lb.
Convert one physical quantity at a time when reconciling a carrier document, supplier specification, or warehouse measurement. Keep the original value and unit next to the converted value so a later reviewer can reproduce the change.
A metric tonne and a US short ton are different units. Conversion does not resolve whether a source weight is net, gross, or chargeable, nor whether a dimension describes a product or its packaging. Resolve that meaning before using the number downstream.
