BEHIND THE NUMBER

How the calculation works

Weight/measurement compares gross space and gross mass after converting each into the contract revenue unit. The larger value, or the entered minimum, sets the base charge. For example, 5 m3 and 2,500 kg with 1 m3 and 1,000 kg per revenue unit produce 5 RT. At $85 per RT plus $150 other charges, the estimate is $575.

Chargeable RT = max(volume / volume factor, weight / weight factor, minimum RT); total = chargeable RT x rate + other charges

When this calculation helps

LCL pricing can use a weight-or-measure basis plus minimums and additional charges. Compare the entered volume and weight against the exact commercial convention before selecting the chargeable quantity.

Check the interpretation

A low base rate may omit origin, destination, documentation, or handling fees. Keep currency and shipment scope consistent, and confirm the quotation validity. This estimate neither books ocean transport nor determines customs or terminal charges.

The factors are editable contract assumptions, not universal rules. Confirm shipment and charge rounding, minimums, origin/destination fees, currency, and quote inclusions. This is not a live freight quote; duties, taxes, and unentered fees are excluded.

Good to know

Is a revenue ton always a metric ton?

No. It is a charging unit determined by the contract weight/measurement factors, rather than the physical mass alone.

Does the estimate round chargeable units?

No. The tool retains fractional revenue units. Apply your actual contractual rounding and minimum-charge rules separately.
